Learning New Skills

Great Comments! Thanks for taking the time....

I feel more like a Digital Immigrant still. When I want to learn a new skill, I am usually on the phone to my kids. Since I am a visual learner it is easier for me to be 'shown' how to do something new.

This class I am involved in is a real stretch for me. While I am familiar with the Blog format, it has been difficult to learn to create a Wiki on my own with the text book. I am now being forced to click on 'Help' and read or watch a Webinar provided by the company. While these and my instructor have help....it has been difficult not to have someone show me what to do.

The questions for today is: How do you learn a new skill on the computer? Why do you learn a new skill?

I normally learn a new skill on the computer just by trial and error. The problem with this strategy is I have a tendency to forget how it was accomplished once it has been done. If I’m really desperate I’ll click on the help buttons but sometimes they can be more of a hindrance than a help. Especially when you can’t find the help topic you are looking for. Lately, the new skills I’ve been learning are how to use the new programs at school; and those are because I have to. Pretty simple reason eh?

What is a Wiki?!

I just loaded Office Home & Student 2007 onto my computer. Now I have to learn Word & PowerPoint all over -- what's new. Mostly, I've been trying to find the features/tools I used before -- and can't find them all! They aren't where I think they should be, so then I hunt for them. I almost never use the Help section bec. it usually doesn't (help).

I'm old & want things to stay the same!!!

I learn new skills on the computer when I need them for an assignment/project or for basic necessity. I rarely learn them for fun unless they are needed for a new gadget I have received or purchased.
When I do have to learn something new, I like to be walked through the process, be able to ask questions, and then analyze the steps making sure that I can complete the skill without someone looking over my shoulder. I want the ability to take what someone has taught me and be able to teach it should anyone else need the same knowledge. I am not one to just let people do things for me so that they get done. I want to know why and how what I am learning applies to what I want to accomplish.

…and I have no idea what a Wiki is either…
