Software Absolutely Needed

Cell Phones Win????

In your opinions, which software do you use the most in your professional life? (This includes being a student.)

Which do you use most in your social circles?

These questions are based on the premise of what should schools be focusing on teaching for the future? Education is focused so much on relevancy. The society of children that come in my classroom are only willing to do as 'little' as they can to pass the project and get the grade. 'Why do I have to do this part??' 'Is that on the test?' I find that sneaks into my thinking when I am in a class and workshop. The work ethic is vastly disappearing from our Culture.

A friend of mine just visited the inside of Cheyenne Mountain recently. The tour guide said that a facility of this type probably could NOT be built today. The Engineers that are graduating today do NOT have the skills to build it.....that's SCARY! Is the computer contributing to this kind of thinking? OR Is our Culture just NOT instilling a healthy work ethic in their children??? Are children so use to having everything handed to them that they are 'lazy to the bone'?

OOPPSS! That's not fair....I gave you more questions than the original 2. Still could you give me a short answer to the others? I would be interested.

OK -- this is the FOURTH time I've tried to leave my comments. Don't know what the problem is, but I haven't been able to publish. Maybe I'm being too long-winded.

I use email and online banking the most. Don't know what those are managed by, but they are vital to my life. I pay all of my bills online -- either I pay them or have set up accounts to be paid by my bank. I have two bills that I can't access online (old technology!!!), so I've set up one of my banks to cut & mail a check for me. That way I don't have to worry about missing any payments -- esp. when I travel.

I won't go into the "are kids lazy" diatribe. I think that's what got me in trouble before (not being able to publish). Maybe I'll get into another time. Suffice it to say, we aren't allowed to point them to God, so we are steering them toward HELL -- no standards, no consequences for wrong actions, etc.

DONE!

I think professionally I use Microsoft Word the most of any software. Word, for me, is not just for writing papers; in fact I am using it now. Most emails that I send are written in Word so that I can check for spelling and grammatical errors. In social circles, I use the internet for facebook, instant messaging and research and iTunes for music.

Schools, especially in the early years, need to make sure that children can function in today’s society with the technologies we have at our disposal. I really think there needs to be a greater emphasis on proper typing skills as well as usages of basic Microsoft Office programs since they are not only being used in the workplace, but they are being required for school assignments.

The computer does tend to have a sense of laziness around it and it does only exacerbate the laziness of today’s children. If you don’t want to go to the library, you can hop onto a search engine and find the information you want and not ever have to leave your seat. However, without the computer we would not be able to do as much as we can today as fast as we have been able. What took people months of work can be done in weeks on computers resulting in a faster quantity, but not necessarily a greater quality.

I truly believe that parents have the overall role of making sure that their children know what a work ethic is and how they can apply it in the home and outside of it. I know it is the child’s choice to decide to use it, but if the information is not provided then what reason do they have to not be lazy? This is where the qualities of a sound work ethic. decision making skills and the ability to see the bigger picture are needed.

I did not get everything handed to me growing up, and although I will not say that I had the hardest childhood, I know I worked hard for what I wanted and I was rewarded. Without my family, the way that I was raised, and the qualities and values that I have had the opportunity to learn and develop, I would definitely not be at a Federal Service Academy and be making such strides as to guarantee a great life for myself in the future. Without my family foundation I would be nothing.

I use PowerPoint and Word the most for my professional life. I started using Excel last semester for my grade book. It does all the averaging for me! As for the social circle, people seem to be migrating more towards Facebook than MySpace. I like Facebook more because I don't get pornography offers every day!

I think schools should be focusing on a world education. Students need to know how they can survive in the WORLD, not the United States. Any business that someone can think of will be connected to the world at large instead of just New York or Los Angeles in the future. Students need to know how to relate to other cultures. Look at it this way, who are typically the rudest and socially unacceptable people in the world? That’s right, uneducated and horrifically disrespectful Americans!

As for your questions, “Is our culture just NOT instilling a healthy work ethic in our children??? Are children so used to having everything handed to them that they are 'lazy to the bone'?” My answer is YES YES YES YES YES.
