Wiki comes from the Hawaiian word 'wiki-wiki' which means 'quick'. We are familiar with Wikipedia which is an encyclopedia that is attempting to store the 'sum of human knowledge'. The founder, Jimmy Wales (2004) said, "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we are doing." All people are invited to add to the knowledge of human kind.
Educator's have a problem with the accuracy of the facts that are added to a particular subject, the originators answer '....that there are vastly more editors that want to make it right than those who want to make it wrong.' If there is inaccurate postings, someone else can go in and dispute giving the correct information. If there is vandalism to the postings, There is a page history where these individuals can be located or you can block them from your site. Most educators will accept the Wikipedia as one source but not the primary source.
I have chosen to make a Private posting on my wiki. It will only allow the people that I have invited to post. The subject matter is The Art of Teaching and it is primarily made up of teachers that have taught or are teaching at Carson.
Wiki's are in my opinion less user friendly to the originator = me. My opinion was colored in that beginning a wiki was more difficult. Where a blog had a 1, 2, 3 step process the wiki did not. There was a webinar (presentation) which took 3 hours to download to my old computer. With the webinar and talking to my instructor, I held my breath and jump in. Once it is begun, it is like a blog in the entry process, availability to be a public or private wiki, or easily accessed. I will not continue subscribing to the PBwiki since after the 2 month free trial there is a cost per month. It has been interesting and challenging to learn this process. A Digital Immigrant can continue to learn. Would I have learned about wiki's on my own, most likely not. It is more applicable for the High School level because of the restrictions on the Internet applied by our School District.
Question for today July 19 -- How, why did you start you own social blog on blogspot?

I started my blogger account because my husband and my mommy-in-love had one. Then, after they started one, my own mommy started one as well. I figured it would be easier to post replies and read everyone's posts if I had a direct link on my own page. It just made sense.
I started my Facebook page to keep up with my friends from college and even a few from high school. The problem that I am running into is I have so many friends and acquaintances that I don't have the time to read through all their profiles and newsfeeds.
Thanks for explaining "wiki". It's all too much for me.
I started my blog bec. I have all these thoughts that run thru my head. I figured it would be a good way to get them "out". I also am very social & figured it would be an outlet for that -- almost like talking.
I don't know if anyone reads my blog -- I almost never get comments. Not that I expect to. I've journaled for many years, and this is sort of like journaling.
Since it is accessible to the public, I find that I "hold back" sometimes. OK -- a lot. I'm afraid of what someone might think if I wrote what I really think/feel. But, on the other hand, since no one comments, that probably means no one is reading, so I should just write it all down. The difference with an actual journal is that I can put it away, my kids will find it after I'm dead & I really won't care what they think!
I don’t have a blogspot! I have links to my family’s blogspots and I read them to keep up with them online. I never really thought of starting one. When it comes to family, I would much rather pick up the phone and hear a familiar voice (even though I only answer the phone for two people). Reading someone’s voice into a post on a blog is a lot harder than hearing it on the other end of the line. Online is not enough of a personal connection for me when it comes to family.
I do use facebook for keeping track of people who I knew from high school and from my colleges. It’s a great communication tool to keep track of friends and acquaintances. I don’t accept friend requests from people that I don’t know so it’s a safe way to find out where people I know are and what they are doing with their lives.
